Slim Jim is a 6–7-year-old, 17lb, Dachshund who has a larger-than-life personality.
He may be paralyzed (fracture in his thoracic spine, assumed he was hit by a car), but that does not stop him one bit. He loves to play with other dogs and toys; he is also very cuddly with his humans. He is very determined and likes to be independent when he can, but he has some serious FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and thrives with being in everyone’s business.
If you google “Dachshund personality”, you will see a description of Slim. He is loyal, affectionate, playful, and brave. He is also bossy, loud, mischievous, and bold.
He can be hesitant with accepting new people, but he will accept the friendship if treats are offered.
He is not a big fan of being held unless he knows the person (if he knows you, you can handle him however needed without issue), and he can be a bit naughty if he is passed over to someone that he does not know (primarily occurs in a veterinary visit setting). Given his Dachshund genetics and injury, this is understandable and easy to manage with treats, reassurance, and if all else fails, throw a blanket over his head.
He does wear a male wrap throughout the day/night to keep him clean. He can poop and pee on his own, but his bladder and bowels are also expressed 4 times per day to ensure his bladder is fully emptied and prevent any poop accidents. Don’t worry, he is very easy to express and well behaved during the ordeal.
He has been with his foster mom since the beginning of April and fit in with the dogs and cat immediately. He has met multiple other foster dogs while here and loves to introduce himself and insists on a game of some sort of play right away. He has assigned himself the job of designated greeter and is very devoted to this position.
If you love the breed, you will love Slim and he will always have you smiling and laughing. He just needs a little extra care due to his injury.
